BERTHOUD — At Turner Middle School, bald is more than just a way to keep a cool head in the summer.
On Friday, several students and teachers will shave their heads to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a nonprofit organization that raises money for children’s cancer research.
Seventh-grader Matt Ayers organized the event after his family and consumer science teacher Tracey Olson gave a lesson earlier this month about giving back to the community through service in honor of Global Youth Service Week.
“Of all my students, Matt really ran with it,” she said.
Matt was inspired to organize the event after seeing Avalanche players shave their heads for St. Baldrick’s, he said.
“I just thought it was cool that you could do this and help raise a cure for cancer,” the 13-year-old said.
Matt has been promoting the event through posters and fliers and the school’s morning announcements.
He didn’t have a hard time persuading some of his friends to join him, either.
“Some of them wanted to get their hair cut anyway,” he joked.
When Olson gave her lesson, she didn’t expect that one of her students would organize such a large event, she said.
“He’s been the big inspiration and energy behind this,” she said.
Participants hope that if they can raise $2,500, then their principal will shave his head.

Congratulations to Brendan Phelps, Nate Strah, Lanie Matsumoto, and Emma Sunness for being selected to participate in the 2008 Rocky Mountain District Player Development Camp in Salt Lake City April 30 - May 4. Good Luck to these NCYH players!
Only three weeks into their spring season the Jr. Eagles squirt Selects participated in the first ever NCYH Spring Warm Up tournament with great success. The Wyoming Wind and the Wyoming Oilers also took part in the tournament fielding two great teams. It all came down to the undefeated Wind and the 2-2 Jr. Eagles in the championship match up. The Wind who had defeated the Jr. Eagles twice in the round robin, both times by a single goal came ready to play the championship game. The Jr. Eagles over came a late third period two goal deficit to take the Wind to overtime and eventually win in a thrilling shoot out. The coaching staff of head coach Mitch Knight and assistant coaches Paul Cooley and Aaron Grosul were extremely happy with the way the boys played. The team showed a tremendous amount of character coming back in the championship game and we are all looking forward to the weeks ahead capping it all off with a great tournament in Chicago.
Hello,
My name is Patrick Nevin and I am a Coach at the 8 & under level for Hyland Hills Hockey Association. We have had a 5 year old Christian Moreno diagnosed with a tumor in his liver. I started off by trying to bring awareness of Christian’s situation to the youth hockey community. What I have received back, has been nothing short of remarkable! And one thing I want to point out is that we can all help in a fight against cancer. One exciting response to my call for help came from Justin Goldman Founder and President of The Hockey Guild.
The Colorado Competitive Youth Hockey League (CCYHL) is ranked the fourth toughest conference for the 06-07 season according to a national hockey rankings website. Rankings take into consideration strength of schedule, goals scored and strength of conference.
We should all be proud that our players are participating in one of the most challenging leagues in the country .

It is advised that parents use their best judgment when deciding to attend practices when there is inclement weather. Because of the size of region that makes up the membership of NCYH, it is difficult for our staff to know what the weather is like in the other areas. For example, it may be acceptable driving conditions at NoCo, but may be treacherous driving conditions in Cheyenne, Longmont, Greeley or other areas. Players should notify their coach as soon as possible if they are unable to make it to practice due to inclement weather. If a coach elects to cancel a practice due to inclement weather, the coach should call the office at NoCo and let them know.
Game cancellation decisions will be made by the staff of NCYH. Game cancellation notification will be posted online no later than 3 hours prior to the start of the game. Managers should contact the opposing team if a game is cancelled due to inclement weather. It is advised that parents use their best judgment regarding driving when there is inclement weather.
